Am I Eligible for Undergraduate Scholarships for International Students in USA?

As an international student, you will not be eligible for funding specifically intended for US citizens.  However, as American universities are prioritizing internationalization, the number of international scholarships to study in the United States has increased.  There are also some American universities that offer blind admission to international students.

Below is a selection of US scholarships for international students, some of them funded by the United States government, some funded by private foundations, and some funded by specific institutions.  Good luck with your applications!

Why study in the United States?

The United States of America (USA) hosts the largest number of international students in the world.  Quality education, unique curricula, a multicultural environment, and abundant opportunities are just some of the reasons why many international students want to study in the United States.

The United States boasts some of the best universities, many of which are ranked in world university rankings.  American institutions are also known to have high academic standards, follow strict quality maintenance practices, and are well-supported to be able to provide an excellent education to their students.  According to the QS World Ranking 2019, 33 of the 100 best universities are from the United States.  Likewise, the Times Higher Education Rankings also ranked seven US universities in its Top 10 Best Universities list.

American universities understand the struggles of international students, and therefore they run regular orientation programs, workshops, and training courses to provide assistance.  In fact, the International Student Office helps students like you get used to a new kind of lifestyle – whether it’s an academic, cultural, or social inquiry, the staff will be there to help you around the clock.

The cost of undergraduate studies in the USA

Tuition fees range from $ 5,000 to $ 50,000 (£ 4,074 – £ 40,746) per year.  Most college degrees last four years, so, on average, students graduate with $ 132,860 (£ 101,505) in debt.

While some countries distinguish between student prices from home, the European Union, and international students, American universities differentiate between students inside the country and abroad.  A typical four-year public college charges in-state students a fee of $ 10,230 per year (£ 7,939) while out-of-state $ 26,290 (£ 20,404) is paid out of state students.  There are non-profit private colleges too, which charge $ 35,830 (£ 27,808) on average.

Those looking for a more affordable option will find lower tuition fees at American universities within the public sector.  These usually run as state university systems – groups of colleges within the state, which share some administrative aspect while operating as separate institutions.  Public universities in the United States have two tuition rates: one for residents of the state and one for everyone else.  The second (most expensive) category applies equally to applicants from other US states and other countries.  Private universities tend to be much smaller than public universities and have a more diverse student population (from different countries and different countries) due to the fact that tuition fees are the same price for all students.
